Can Salt Hypothesis Explain the Trends of Mortality from Stroke and Stomach Cancer in Western Europe?

چکیده
The salt hypothesis was revived in 1904 by Ambard and Beaujard and since then, many researches around the world have been studying this aspect. The salt hypothesis states that salt is necessary for the genesis of essential hypertension. Moreover, the mortality rates of stomach cancer and stroke were found to decrease in a similar way over a given time in different countries. Based on an observation in 1965—that stomach cancer mortality and stroke mortality were strongly correlated—the hypothesis was presented that salt could be involved in the etiology of both the diseases, although by different mechanisms. While salt intake could have an influence on blood pressure and thus increasing the risk of stroke mortality, it can also have a caustic influence on the stomach mucosa, stimulating atrophic gastritis leading to stomach cancer. We performed a time series analysis in which special attention was paid to cohort patterns. [7,8]

The mortality rates of stomach cancer and stroke were found to decrease in a similar way over a given time in different countries. The same phenomenon can be observed in Finland for both sexes. Salt is suggested to be the linking factor in the stroke-stomach cancer relationship. Recent studies indicate that salt intake in Finland is very high. Actual salt consumption levels are in Finland as hi...

متن کاملSalt and geographical mortality of gastric cancer and stroke in Japan.
Age- and sex-adjusted mortality rates of gastric cancer and stroke in the years 1974-6 for 46 prefectures and 12 regions in Japan were related to regional differences of average per capita daily intake of salt during the period 1966-70 to test Joossen's hypothesis that salt is a common cause of both gastric cancer and stroke. While mortality rates of stroke were strongly correlated with salt in...
